Sunken Stone Age Village Revealed

Welcome to the pile dwellings in Unteruhldingen, one of Europe’s largest and oldest open-air archaeological museums. The 23 reconstructions of pile dwellings from the Bronze and Stone Ages have made a fascinating, sunken world visible again for almost a century.

Your visit starts with ARCHAEORAMA, a virtual multimedia show that documents the work of underwater archaeologists at Lake Constance. This is followed by a 35-minute tour of the detailed

replicas of the pile dwellings, where you will learn all about daily life 6,000 and 3,000 years ago. Very exciting indeed! After the guided tour, you can explore the open-air facility on your own.

The special exhibition ‘Das Erbe der Pfahlbauer’ (The Heritage of the Pile Dwellers) displays more than 1,000 finds from Lake Constance, including magnificent needles and pearls that women used as jewellery. Many finds, including textiles, breads and murals, have been preserved to this day due to the lack of oxygen. These unique conservation conditions have contributed to UNESCO designating the ‘Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps’ a World Heritage Site. In the holiday seasons, you can participate in one of the Stone Age Parcours (dates available on the website).

Tip:

Interactive and informative events about dugout canoes and nutrition are held at the Stone Age Parcour in the holidays.
