The Battlement Walkway in Isny

Isny im Allgäu, Germany

The battlement walkway crowning the medieval city wall is the historic, architectural highlight of Isny in Allgäu. The narrow, wooden defense walkway is elevated and covered by a protective shingled roof, lined with lookouts and loopholes from the Middle Ages. At that time it was necessary to protect the Free Imperial City and its market, along with her citizens. Today, you can stroll along the above-ground battlements with bird’s-eye views of the city’s oval layout, former moat and parklands.

Isny offers much more than a walk along the battlement. City gates, towers with original dungeons, pretty townhouses, an old Benedictine monastery (the present-day castle) and a handful of churches welcome explorers of all ages. These historic icons have shaped the city for the past 1000 years.

Walking tours tell the story of Isny’s rise to prominence as a trade center (Isny tells Stories); the lifestyle and culture of rich merchants (Isny City Hall); and the former defense ring around the city oval (trilogy tour: “Towers, Walls and Prisons”). More tour information is found here.

It gets a bit scary in the Wassertor Museum dungeon. Insider tip: The preachers’ library is a 15th century study in its original state.

Isny’s historic buildings represent the power, the atmosphere, and the charm of the Middle Ages. They are places of inspiration. You can see evidence of these features in the Municipal Gallery in the Espantor, in the Kunsthalle, and in the Castle Gallery.
