Eistobel

Isny im Allgäu, Germany

Rushing waterfalls, deep swirling holes, huge rocks and cliffs

Rushing waterfalls, deep swirling holes, huge rocks and cliffs - this is the Eistobel. Find out more about the origins of this canyon geology, the elusive alpine salamander and the Turk’s cap lily on expert-led outings during Isny’s NaturSommer series. There are three ways for hikers to reach the Eistobel. The most challenging route is crossing the Eistobel in combination with climbing to the peak of the Riedholzer Kugel (1,056 m) 3,464 ft.

Imagine sharks and sea urchins in the Allgäu! Indeed, the 200-meter rock walls hide relics of an ancient time when this area was covered by a sea. But there are also living creatures to discover: shiny black alpine salamanders, hawks soaring overhead, flea crabs and larvae  under river stones. The roar of the waterfalls accompanies your hike in the moist and shady gorge. For those who want to know more, Isny Marketing GmbH offers guided tours with experts from the Isny NaturSommer series.

If you’d like to hike the gorge and surrounding mountains, there are three ways: Leisurely, but steadily uphill, you follow the course of the river from the info pavilion Eistobel to the starting point Schüttentobel (3.5 km, approx. 1.5 hours walking time). Somewhat more demanding is the round trip over the Staufenberg (5.3 km, 2 hrs walking time). For those with good endurance, you can do the Tobeltour with the Riedholzer Kugel (1,056 m) 3,464 ft. (8.9 km, 3.5 hrs walk). All tour descriptions are found here.
