Treasures of the Past at Lake Constance

Cultural highlights are no rarity around Lake Constance. Start your tour by exploring the Monastic Island of Reichenau, which is one of the sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Continue your journey with a close look at the Council of Constance, where the only pope election north of the Alps took place. Then take a ferry to Meersburg, where you can visit the Burg Meersburg. Continue your tour and discover the New Palace in Tettnang which is the perfect place to linger a while over coffee and cake. After that pay a visit to Vaduz where you can watch a film about the history of the Principality of Liechtenstein in the new build Princely Theatre. After a one hour drive you arrive at St. Gallen where you can marvel at the abbey district and library. Then discover the Munot fortress, a veritable enblem of the city Schaffhausen. End the tour visiting the Fortress ruins of Hohentwiel above the city Singen.

Your Lake Constance experience for 5 days

1. Monastic Island of Reichenau | Germany
The three Romanesque churches on the island are a perfect example of Early Medieval architecture in Central Europe. The meticulously restored murals emphasise Reichenau’s role as an “artistic centre of considerable significance for European art history of the 10th and 11th centuries”.

2. Council of Constance | Germany 
It was the first and only pope election north of the Alps that took place between 1414 and 1418 in Constance.  Revive the time of the Konstanzer Konzil together with a guided city tour or a dinner at the Council.

3. Old Castle in Meersburg | Germany
The walls of Meersburg, the oldest inhabited castle in Germany, have so much to tell, not only of peaceful, courtly times but also of sieges and military confrontations. Visitors can explore these times in a clearly explained visit through more than 30 furnished rooms of the castle museum.

4. New Palace, Tettnang | Germany
With the “Kaffeekränzle im Schloss”, visitors begin to discover the counts’ private apartments. The stunning highlight of the visit is the “Kaffeekränzle” (coffee table) in the baroque “Bacchus Saal” (Bacchus hall). Visitors can then enjoy cakes from the historic recipe book of the Counts of Montfort.

5. Princely Theatre | Principality of Liechtenstein

6. St.Gallen abbey district/abbey library | Switzerland
Built in 1755, the abbey library is one of the largest and oldest abbey libraries in the world. Some 150,000 tomes are kept in the stunning rococo hall with its gently curving wooden galleries and rich moulding, including the world famous monastery plan drawn up on Reichenau Island.

7. Fortress of Munot, Schaffhausen | Switzerland
The Munot is the undisputed emblem of the City of Schaffhausen. No other city in the Confederation could afford such a monumental structure in the 16th century. There is a wide range of traditional and modern activities to be discovered around the emblematic fortress.

8. Fortress ruins Hohentwiel Singen | Germany
The fortress ruins sitting on top of the mountain above Singen cover an impressive nine hectares. The ruins are the largest in Germany: the defensive walls, mighty tower ruins and the large house ruins still give visitors a good idea of what this bastion would have looked like in the 18th century.
