Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

Friedrichshafen, Germany

Interested in how Count Zeppelin had his airship built? Curious to know about his greatest achievements – and how such terrible tragedies could have occurred? Discover the museum of technology and art. The Zeppelin Museum invites you to take a fresh look at these works of art. This approach is unlike any other in the world!

The Zeppelin hangar is devoted to LZ 129 Hindenburg, the “luxury liner of the airs”, which was destroyed by fire in Lakehurst in 1937. Visitors climb a gangway into the faithful reconstruction of the major passenger areas of the “Hindenburg”. There they become passengers, strolling through the lounges designed in the Bauhaus style of the 1930s. Original passenger cabins complete the feeling of travelling by airship.

The inner reconstruction offers an insight into the day-to-day work of the flight crew. People behind the technology tell their stories: from the cell maintenance staff to the radio operator. The largest piece of wreckage from the Hindenburg – the rudder support arm – is also exhibited here.

The museum also showcases models and original exhibits produced in detail as well as films and photos relating to airship travel from its early beginnings the Montgolfier brothers and their hot air balloons to the modern-day Zeppelin NT (new technology).

The art collection includes works by the most significant artists in southern Germany from the Middle Ages to the modern era. Furthermore, the museum also boasts major baroque paintings and one of the world’s most extensive collections of works by Otto Dix.

The museum also houses temporary exhibitions implementing a comprehensive communication programme.
