Lake Dwelling Museum Unteruhldingen

Uhldingen-Mühlhofen, Germany

A sunken world heritage site made visible

In the mood for a museum? Then head for the Lake Dwelling Museum on Lake Constance. It is only a five-minute walk from the Unteruhldingen landing jetty – Welcome to the Stone Age! The lake dwellings of Unteruhldingen are one of the largest and oldest open-air Museums in Europe. From the museum’s villages, you enjoy a stunning view over the entire Überlinger See.

23 reconstructed houses offer an insight into the lives of the farmers, traders and fishermen who lived here in the past. Stretching across three millennia, the six villages suspended on stilts above the water take visitors on a fascinating journey through time. Protected under the water, many objects have been preserved. These include old wood, bread, hats and even thousand-year-old wall paintings. They are all on show in the Lake Dwelling Museum; Thanks to these unique preservation conditions, UNESCO designated the “pile dwellings around the “ a World Heritage site.

The “ARCHAEORAMA” multimedia show explains what this invisible heritage looks like. After visiting the the replica lake dwellings and the special exhibition, visitors can take in the Stone Age trail where trying out and participating are part of the experience. The special exhibition entitled “The legacy of the pile dwellers” presents more than 1,000 original finds. The museum is barrier-free, labelled a family-friendly venue and easily accessible with pushchairs.

Tip:

The programme is completed by a number of special events: special programme in the Stone Age trail during the holidays. During the “ARCHAE-X” days, groups of historic characters await visitors to take them into an exciting world by means of numerous presentations.
