Lake Constance region - Hegau

Hegau Region

Fascinating Diversity at the western shores of Lake Constance

The Hegau region, situated at the western end of Lake Constance and located between the Rhein and Danube Rivers, acquired its unique and distinctive character through two very opposing elements—volcanic fire and glacial ice. Bizarre volcanic formations, stately knights’ castles, the thunderous Rhein Falls near Schaffhausen as well as bewitching river landscapes all characterize the Hegau Region at the southernmost point of Germany. Nine cone-shaped relicts of archaic volcanic activity tower in bizarre formations throughout the hilly landscape between the Swabian Alp and Lake Constance. Not only is their form very unusual but their names are singular as well: Hohenkrähen, Hohenhewen, Hohenstoffeln. The most famous amongst them, the Hohentwiel near Singen, is equally distinguished by the oldest fortification ruins in Germany which are located on the summit. An extensive network of colourful hiking and biking pathways make the Hegau Region a worthwhile destination for all sport-interested tourists. Thanks to various factors including the strategic advantages offered by volcanic elevations, more than 380 castles and fortifications dating back to the Middle Ages are to be found within a 20 kilometer radius. There is no other region in Germany offering so many medieval sites in such close proximity.
